The episode has no pre-credits scene. The episode opens with Martin and Douglas in the cockpit of GERTI, ringing the service bell. Carolyn comes into the flight deck and explains that since Arthur isn't on the flight, the service bell is purely decorative. This gets them started on the "One Syllable" game, in which they're only allowed to use words of one syllable. Arthur rings the sat comm and explains that Martin's mother has had a heart attack and is in the hospital.

Martin rushes to the hospital from work and meets with his mother and sister. Martin finds out it wasn't a heart attack, but angina. Dr. White recommends she stay at home and relax. Meanwhile, Carolyn and Douglas have a contest to see who can play a game of "One Syllable" the longest. Back at home, Martin is finding life with his mother difficult. Martin turns up for work the next day completely tired and falls asleep. Carolyn gets the idea of unleashing Arthur on Martin's mother, because he's so helpful and doesn't seem to notice if people want him to or not. The next day, Arthur goes round to Wendy;s house and decides to help her out all day.

Back on GERTI, Douglas and Carolyn are still going at their game, having played solidly with no winner for 2 straight days. Back at Wendy's house, Wendy and Arthur are doing jigsaws together as Martin comes in and explains that he's a Man with a Van as well as a pilot. Meanwhile, on GERTI, the game is still going on and they're at a stalemate. Back in Wokingham, Martin's brother, Simon comes in, hugs Martin and lifts him, then offers to get his doctor to come take a look at Wendy.

Martin admits to Douglas that his brother steamrollers all over him, prompting Douglas and Carolyn to come over. However, they embarass themselves as they're still playing the "One Syllable" game. Martin forces them to stop playing as they come back out and work with Martin, telling stories on how great Martin is. This scares Simon off. They leave for Fitton airport. Arthur wants to play the One Syllable game, but fails.
