Nerdversity Reviews: Power Rangers Megaforce Gosei Morpher

Released in 2013 as part of the Power Rangers Megaforce toy line, the Gosei Morpher represents the device used by the rangers to transform into their superhero forms. The box is in the red, gold and black decoration that was the theme of that series' toys. It also marked the start of the Red Ranger holding the morpher via the graphic and a plastic insert in the shape of a hand. There is a try me function on the front, with which children can pull down on the mouthpiece of the morpher and then push it back up to activate sounds.

The back of the box shows the Red Ranger holding the morpher and a list of all it's features, as well as what 10 cards you get free in the set. There's also an advert of the card scanner app for mobile devices, but it no longer works and has been taken down from the app stores across both android and iOS.

Taking the device out of the box, it's evident that it's based on the Tensounder from the Goseiger series, but it's not the same. It's smaller, the eyes don't change colour and the mouth isn't red, it's black. It also has a switch for the card game at the back of it, which the Tensounder doesn't have. Otherwise, it's largely the same and does fit quite well in the hand.

Also in the box, there's a black plastic hook for attaching the morpher to the belt. I've tried this and it does fit quite well on a pair of jeans and does take a lot to remove it. Once attached, it doesn't come off easily, which is a great feature for many fans and children.

The cards you get are based on Troy, the red ranger. You get his 5 main cards and they work in both modes. In toy mode we have
These also work as base cards in the TCG mode, where when scanned, they will give off a random power level for the game.

Interestingly, the TRY ME card works outside this mode and when scanned into the morpher in play mode, it will say "MIGHTY MORPHIN RED", followed by a transformation sound effect, when scanned in TCG mode, it'll give off a random power level

Aside from Troy's deck, you get 5 cards based on the Legendary Red Rangers, which are Mystic Force, SPD, Wild Force, Ninja Storm and Jungle Fury. They all say their respective team name when scanned into the morpher and then random power stats when scanned in during the TCG mode.

Overall, not a bad morpher. It does have a lot of play value in it, especially with the sheer amount of Gosei Cards that can be scanned  in, not just from the series, but ones from the TCG as well that activate almost 200 sounds from the morpher in play mode alone. Sadly, the app is no longer working or up, so that functionality is lost. If you can find this morpher cheap on the secondary market or if your toy store is still carrying it, pick it up and some cards, there is a little something here for everyone.
