Nerdversity Reviews: Matchbox Thunderbirds Pull Back Action Thunderbird 1

The final set of toys in the Expansion Series in 1993/1994, was the Pull Back Action Vehicles series. There were only 3 toys released in this set, Thunderbird 1, Thunderbird 2 and Thunderbird 4. They were very simple pull back and go toys.

Thunderbird 1 is a little squatter and fatter to fit in a 3 inch scale. The card is the same as all the expansion wave material. Thunderbird 1 sits on the card at an angle.

The back of the card is exactly the same on all 3 toys. The same bio from all the previous cards. The bottom of the card features stock images of all the previous toys in a black and white image. Underneath that is all the copyright and trademark information for Matchbox and Gerry Anderson.

Here's Thunderbird 1 out of the package. The underside has the wheels and the pull back motor. It's 3 inches of solid plastic with 2 stickers of THUNDERBIRD down the fuselage and 1 around the booster. The toy features a very nice metallic silver paint scheme with a bright red nose cone. Pulling back and letting go makes it shoot across the floor quite quickly and the wings pop out.

Aside from a single carded version, Matchbox did release a gift set version that had all 3 packaged together. Plenty of options for Thunderbirds fans.

Is this set worth picking up? It depends really. The vehicle itself goes for around £5 for a carded or loose example in good condition. The set is about £12 overall for the three pack. If you're a massive fan of the series and like pull back and go vehicles, it might be up your alley, if not, then this is one you might want to skip over.
