Nerdversity Reviews: Transformers G1 Top Trumps

2014 was the 30th Anniversary of Transformers G1, one of the most popular and well known of all Generations of Transformers, one that still continues to thrive to this day. As part of the 30th anniversary. Winning Moves, the current owners of Top Trumps released a deck themed around G1.

It comes in a tan plastic case, with a pull down clear plastic tray. The cards themselves are size of playing cards. The title card has the TOP TRUMPS logo and comic art of Powermaster Optimus Prime on the front, The Transformers logo is the same one that was used in the late G1/G2 run and then underneath that we have the CELEBRATING 30 YEARS banner,

Behind the title card, we have an advert for the 30th anniversary Monopoly set, which I do intend to get and review at some point. According to their shop page, the set is still available for £30,

Here's two of the cards. The cards themselves are printed on tan card with the title on the back. The front features the Transformer name, a picture taken from the box art, a series of ratings and a short bio. Now, many people who read this blog who were children in the 70s and 80s would remember these and how to play, but for those that don't: The game is played with 2 players. The deck is shuffled and split evenly. Decide who goes first. Pick a topic, such as disguise. Both players play their top card, the winner is the one with the highest number and the winner gets the loser's card. The game keeps going until one person's hand is exhausted. The Transformers in the deck are:
  • Astrotrain
  • Barrage
  • Blitzwing
  • Bluestreak
  • Brawn
  • Bumblebee
  • Cliffjumper
  • Cosmos
  • Devastator
  • Frenzy
  • Grapple
  • Grimlock
  • Hound
  • Huffer
  • Ironhide
  • Jazz
  • Laserbeak
  • Megatron
  • Optimus Prime
  • Ransack
  • Ratchet
  • Ravage
  • Seaspray
  • Shockwave
  • Skywarp
  • Soundwave
  • Starscream
  • Thundercracker
  • Topspin
  • Windcharger
I paid £4 for this deck from a comic store while I was on vacation last week. It's a fun little set and features a nice balance of well known and more obscure Transformers characters. It appeals to both kids and collectors, who would both get a lot of enjoyment out of it.
