Nerdversity Reviews: Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm Vol 2 - Overthrown

Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm was a 1996 cartoon series based on a mixture of the movie and the video games, serving as a sequel to both the movie and MK3. Rather than being like a martial arts tournament like in the games, it's more akin to GI Joe.

The DVD itself is made by the British Company Digital Video Dreams and is the only version of the DVD in Europe. There are French menu options, but the audio is entirely in English. The cover features all the Kombatants. Once again, the episodes are out of order.

Overthrown is actually the 13th and final episode of the series. It features the final battle between Rayden and the Kombatants and Shao Khan. The episode is taken directly from the VHS, so features degradation and low quality.

Skin Deep is the 4th episode in the series. It marks the first appearance of Rain in the cartoon series. plus his apparent marriage to Kitana. Taken directly from the VHS as well.

Amends is the 11th episode. It marks the first appearance of Kabal in the series and deals with Kabal helping the Kombatants track down Kano. Taken direct from the VHS. I noticed a lot of degradation lines in this episode and definite low quality.

Resurrection is the 9th episode in the series. It deals with Shao Khan resurrecting the deceased Shang Tsung. Taken directly from the VHS, loads of degradation here.

I found this DVD for about £1 on the secondary market. It's an alright DVD. It plays fine. My only real concern is how cheap it feels overall.
