Horror games were largely absent from the early days of gaming. Sure, there were a handful of spooky themed games, but the survival horror genre had it's early roots in the NES.
Konami released Castlevania in 1987. It came in that classic silver box. Castlevania took it's inspiration from the classic monster movies of the 1930s, with a heaping of Bram Stoker's Dracula thrown into the mix.
Castlevania was a typical action platformer, with survival horror elements. Stepping into the shoes of Simon Belmont, players were tasked with traversing Dracula's castle and defeat the evil count. Players would need to navigate some nasty and deadly monsters and even deadlier traps and pit falls.
